1What is the difference between a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a counsellor?
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who does additional training in mental health and often advises on medication levels. A psychologist a professional trained in many aspects of mental health at a university level and must be nationally registered to use the title. A counsellor is different in that there is no registration required, and as such, it is best to check on the level of education of the counsellor in considering your needs.
2Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No, a referral is not required to see a psychologist. Some people do however choose to access a mental health care plan from their GP, which entitles them to a Medicare rebate off of the session cost.
3What do I need to bring to the first session?
The first session can be pretty daunting and really, the most important thing you need to bring is YOU!! Of course, if you have a referral or previous relevant medical reports, these can be helpful.
4How long is a session?
Sessions last 50min – 1 hour.
5How many sessions will I need to see the psychologist for?
This is a tricky one to answer as it will change for each person. It will depend on what a client is presenting for and how well sessions are engaged in. We do know that the average number of sessions clients see us for is 5, but some people are less while others are more.
6Fees and finances - my GP told me I don't have to pay for sessions.
This can be a bit confusing. While a Mental Health Care Plan allows access to Medicare, the cost will vary. A little bit like when you see a GP, some bulk bill whilst others will charge. It is similar with Psychologists. Some will bulk bill, while other practices will charge a fee. Bulk billing as a psychologist, however, is limited. Sessions are required to be 50 min plus and are limited in the number of sessions each year. For these reasons, bulk billing psychologists can have wait-list of 3 months or longer. Reset Psychology does not bulk bill, however, we also are able to offer appointments usually within a week.
7Is what I discuss with my psychologist confidential?
For the most part, yes, what you discuss with your psychologist is confidential. However, when the information disclosed concerns someone being unsafe, then it is the responsibility of the psychologist to ensure safety and it may, in some cases, lead to disclosing this information with the intent of keeping people safe. This will all be explained in the first session, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions if you feel this may relate to your situation.
